Jesus Is Better

Last night we gathered together with our spiritual family and interceded on behalf of our little girl.

It was a powerful experience. I melted into a hot, sweaty crying mess – it was totally acceptable though because there were Cedar Trees and people cutting onions in the room…

As we worshiped before our time of prayer, we sang a song that was written by our Austin Stone Worship team titled “Jesus is Better”. The song was pertinent and timely for my heart, soul and mind. The first section states:

There is no other, so sure and steady

My hope is held in Your Hand.

When castles crumble, and breath is fleeting

Upon this rock I will stand, upon this rock I will stand.

How true is this for us? Is there anyone more sure and steady than our Savior? Absolutely not (Heb. 6:19).

When castles crumble, and breath is fleeting – or when you get diagnosed with cancer, or when your little girl is born with a birth defect, or when you get the phone call of an unexpected death – we have a Rock to stand upon (Matt. 7:24-27).

The bridge of the song is what drives home the truth that Chelsea and I are holding onto today.

In all my sorrows – Jesus is better, make my heart believe

In every vict’ry – Jesus is better, make my heart believe

Than any comfort – Jesus is better, make my heart believe

More than all riches – Jesus is better, make my heart believe

Our souls declaring – Jesus is better, make my heart believe

Our song eternal – Jesus is better, make my heart believe.

In ALL things – sorrows, victory’s, comforts, riches – Jesus is better. For many of us though, if we’re honest with ourselves, struggle to believe these things. We think HOW IN THE WORLD is Jesus better than riches or comfort?!? How is Jesus better than me living in a mansion in Malibu driving my Corvette Stingray up the Pacific Coast Highway with no cares in the world? How is Jesus better than never having to suffer? How is Jesus better than success, fame, wealth, power, influence, etc.?

Jesus is better because he took our sins and nailed them to the cross (Col. 2:14). Jesus is better because he reconciled us back to God (2 Cor. 5:18). Jesus is better because in him we find life and life abundantly (John 10:10). Jesus is better because he gives rest to the weary (Matt. 11:28). Jesus is better because he is the one who truly satisfies the deepest yearnings of the soul (John 4:12-14).  Jesus is better because one day he is coming back and not as a simple carpenter, but as a conquering king who is going to right all the wrongs in the world (Rev. 1:7, 21:5, 22:12-13).

JESUS IS BETTER.

In our feeble and weak frames we constantly have to cry out to God as the man cried out to Jesus in Mark 9:24, “I believe; help my unbelief” to help us cling to this truth as an anchor for our souls.

JESUS IS BETTER – Father, I believe this truth, but help my unbelief. This…this… is the cry of our hearts.

So today at 1pm when my Davy girl goes in for surgery I will sing this song over her. I will sing to her that Jesus is better no matter what.

I will sing this because my hope isn’t found in nurses, doctors or surgeons. I will sing this because my hope isn’t found in the expectation that one day we’ll come out of this trial. I will sing this because my hope isn’t found in the health or healing of my little girl.

I will sing this because the statement rings with reverberating, eternal truth – JESUS IS BETTER.

So I ask that you would sing this truth with me today – no matter what you’re going through – and cry out: Jesus, YOU ARE BETTER…I believe; help my unbelief.
